I began skating in 2010, taking an interest in freestyle after seeing Rodney Mullen on an old episode of “That’s Incredible”. After researching and seeking out someone to show me some basics, I met Ben Farquhar (L.A. Freestyler) who helped me get started. Through the Sk8Kings jams held over those subsequent years, I got to meet and become pals with Darryl Grogan and some of the best freestyle skaters in the world, all of whom i’m proud to call mentors and friends.
I went to Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California where the first flat-ground ollie was landed in a freestyle contest by a guy named Rodney Mullen i’m told. I work for Brush Research Manufacturing where we make brushes for every industry from the oil business to the defense and aerospace business. I push pencils and talk with business supply chain people all day to get big orders flowing for our brushes. The customer communication business has been my day job in various places since I was 19.
Back in 2013 I started California’s only official unofficial annual freestyle jam. It’s held every January right after New Years and we call it The Jan-Jam. This year was our 5th. It’s a loosely organized get together where we share tricks and have fun. I bring free snacks, drinks, and a boombox and we just skate from noon til’ dusk. It’s proving quite popular and is becoming a great way for SoCal Freestylers and anyone near town to get connected and skate. It’s also a nice kickoff to World Round Up training season! I’ve got a great girlfriend named Kelly who doesn’t get too mad when I take a 2 hour skate session to practice freestyle. It’s definitely good and quite important to have a supportive lady when you’re skating in your late 30’s and up!
The first time I came to the World Round Up was back in 2013, always have fun here so I am back for my fifth time competing in the amateur division. My personal goal is to get into the the top 10 and skate the finals on Sunday and just have fun all around. I’m proof that you’re never too old to get started with skateboarding and look forward to skating this years competition again with my freestyle family. In my spare time I play guitar, piano and am the vocalist for a Los Angeles based music project called ”Far Radio Clouds.” I may even compose my own music to skate to for this years Round-Up!
