2012 Contest
The 2012 World Freestyle Round-Up is now a part of history, with over 30 contestants from eight country’s participating in the four day event taking home part of the largest Prize Money Purse in freestyle history. Darryl Grogan took 1st place winning $4,000, with Germany’s Gunter Mokulys coming in 2nd place pocketing $2,000 and $1,000 going to 3rd place winner Rene Shigueto from Brazil. The remaining part of the $10,000 was distributed to the rest of top ten pros and to the winners of the 360 Spin Off and Best Trick contests.
As you can imagine an event of this size and caliber takes a lot of team work and sponsorship dollars to make it a success and that is exactly what it was, in fact many times throughout the long weekend there was standing room only! One of the key reasons for these large energetic crowds is that over the past 30 years the sport of freestyle has evolved and one of the main influences has been the powerful and creative skating style of Kilian Martin who was on hand to help judge as well as to put on Freestyle Demos. Kilian is moving Freestyle out of the 80’s and into the future and his entourage of young upcoming freestyle skaters are following in his footsteps. Another highlight, at last years contest, is that George Powell let us screen a copy of Stacy Peralta’s new movie “The BONES BRIGADE: An Autobiography”. If that wasn’t enough Brett Novak premiered his new short film “ALTERED ROUTE” featuring Kilian skating an abandoned water park.
The highlights of the World Round-Up were also captured by Concrete Wave magazine who ran two articles covering the event and Hydrolife magazine who ran a five page article on Darryl Grogan in their Aug/Sept issue.
